Hound Lodge │ Chichester

Hound Lodge │ Chichester

At Hound Lodge, in the midst of Goodwood's spectacular 12,000-acre estate, life flows at a different pace. This magnificent 10-bedroom country retreat is yours to experience in its entirety, offering a rare opportunity to spend time away from it all and escape the hectic pace of modern life.

A beautiful escape from the world
As the home of the world’s first major foxhunt and the very reason the first Duke of Richmond bought a house at Goodwood in 1697, The Kennels, and later Hound Lodge were considered to be the most luxurious dog houses in the world. In a manner typical of English aristocracy, the Duke was renowned for spending far more time and money on his hounds and horses than on his friends and guests. He even famously installed central heating in The Kennels 100 years before the human owners were able to enjoy it at Goodwood House. Hound Lodge has recently been completely restored for humans to enjoy, but hounds are warmly welcomed here, not only do they form part of the heritage and history of the building, they provide a source of inspiration for much of the interior.

The Hound Lodge butler and chef will make sure you and your guests are well looked after at all times. Everything about the experience is relaxed and special; from the comfy beds, with mattresses stuffed with wool from sheep grazing on the Estate, to dinner, which is all about country house service rather than the stuffy formality of fine dining. Time and space are modern luxuries and, at Hound Lodge, there is the chance to really enjoy them. A sense of solitude and peace is found here, away from it all, deep in the Sussex countryside.

The antithesis of a hotel, Hound Lodge offers an experience that you simply can't get anywhere else. This supremely comfortable place offers peace and respite from the world. Beds that demand the deepest of sleeps, the reassuring warmth and crackle of an open fire and a sense of an old-fashioned world in the best possible way.

Bedrooms
Each bedroom is individually designed and named after one of the 10 hounds from the famous chase of the 1739 Charlton Hunt, the 'Greatest Chase that ever was' as they galloped for ten hours over 57 miles of Sussex countryside.

The rooms are decorated with pictures, photographs, quirky ornaments and antiques to reflect the family's sporting heritage. It's not only the eiderdown quilts and plump mattress, filled with wool from the sheep that graze on the Goodwood Estate, that encourages you to rest that little bit longer, each of your ten rooms includes those special homely touches such as mini decanters of whisky and hot water bottles for the colder months. That under-rated pastime, sleep, is positively encouraged and an afternoon nap de rigueur.

The Drawing Room
The drawing room is the heart of the lodge., where guests can relax surrounded by original paintings that reflect Goodwood’s sporting heritage. The room contains splendid antiques, many of which were reclaimed from the attic of Goodwood House. The drawing room is a mix of old and new, splendid yet comfortable, with an authentic personal touch. Piles of books, board games, a card table and a well-stocked bar provide plenty of distraction. Afternoon tea is served here, followed later by delicious pre-dinner treats including Goodwood’s own ale nuts or the unbelievably-good pork crackling bites. After dinner, you can play games, dance or simply listen to your favourite music, enjoying your favourite drink, perhaps even chatting until dawn breaks over the Estate.

The Dining Room
The seemingly endless Georgian dining table dates from the late eighteenth century and was previously used at Goodwood House for banquets in the Ballroom. It is perfectly at home in the more relaxed surroundings of Hound Lodge and offers the ideal centrepiece for an exuberant evening, with good food and excellent wine. There is a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere which belies the sense of occasion the room bestows. The Hound Lodge chef will design a seasonal menu that reflects the preferences and tastes of you and your guests, while making the most of the organic Estate-reared and home-grown produce from Goodwood Home Farm.
